Senior tennis team Coordinator’s Report

Annual General Meeting

21^st March 2006

This season we have had a group of 5 people from the senior teams to help pick teams and organise the senior section of the club. The help has been greatly appreciated. I wish to thank Jacqui Harrison for organising the ladies section of the club, David Turner for looking after the men until just before Christmas, Kate Nixon and Chris Smale for helping with selection and phoning players before the season started and again in January before matches recommenced.

This year the club has definitely 4 teams in the finals and possibly 6 teams, depending on results of other matches last Saturday. This is a significant improvement on the results of past seasons and we wish all the teams the best for the final series.

This year there was a distinct improvement in player commitment, particularly before the Christmas break. After the break, possibly when it became evident that some teams would struggle to make the finals, we have seen an increase in the number of players being unavailable. It also coincided with an increase in injuries, work and other commitments such as football. This is disappointing, particularly when other commitments take precedent over tennis, despite the fact that all players committed to play tennis for the season at the start of the season. As a result, most weeks after Christmas, each team has found themselves with fill ins. To all the extra players, who helped us out over the year many thanks, in particular Emily Lundborg, who played 12 of 16 matches as a fill-in, Shelley Eitzen and Sharyn Clarke. It sounds as though the ladies were a “problem” but this is not the true picture. The Club nominated teams that only usually had 4 ladies in the team, so that whenever one person was unavailable, the club was looking for a replacement lady player.

In closing, thank you again to this year’s helpers, particularly Jacqui, to the Management Committee for their support and to the players. I sincerely hope that you enjoyed playing at Blackwood and will be back again next year.
